We prefer to use the term, legal investigator.  Any investigation is simply a gathering of the facts.  Legal investigation is the gathering of facts pertaining to a situation which is likely to be the subject of litigation.  The legal investigator is committed to the pursuit of truth above all else.  Our goal is to lay the groundwork for success.  Our job is to assist the attorney in the preparation of litigation, but our work is accomplished in the field where the event that is the subject of litigation has taken place.  The law guides but the facts make the case.  There is no such thing as an unfavorable fact, our job is to gather those facts so the attorney can apply the law.  As a non-lawyer, the legal investigator is more easily able to maintain rapport with witnesses and to serve as a buffer between witnesses and the attorney.
